Are Mac cleaner apps safe, and do you need one?

Some Mac cleaners are useful, some are scareware. How to tell them apart, what macOS already does for you, and what a safe Mac cleaner should never do.

Short answer

Mac cleaners are safe when they explain what they remove, let you review it, move files to the Trash first, and leave macOS system files alone. They are risky when they use scary warnings, promise a faster Mac, “clean” memory, or delete without showing you what. Many Macs never need one; a cleaner helps when System Data or developer files fill the disk.

The steps
  1. Check where the app comes from: the Mac App Store or the developer’s own site.
  2. Avoid apps that show alarming warnings or “thousands of problems” on first launch.
  3. Use only cleaners that show each item and let you choose.
  4. Prefer cleaners that move files to the Trash instead of deleting them.
  5. Start with macOS’s own Storage settings; add a cleaner only when System Data stays large.

Signs of a bad Mac cleaner

  • Fear on first launch: red warnings, “your Mac is at risk”, a huge count of “problems”.
  • Promises it can’t keep: “speed up your Mac 300%”, “free your RAM”. macOS manages memory on its own; deleting files doesn’t make a Mac with plenty of free space faster.
  • One big Clean button with no list of what goes.
  • Permanent deletion with no way back.
  • Installed through a pop-up or ad you didn’t look for.

What macOS already does

  • Storage recommendations in System Settings › General › Storage: empty the Trash automatically, store files in iCloud, review large files.
  • Purgeable space is freed automatically when you need it. What purgeable means
  • Malware protection with XProtect and Gatekeeper.
