The real CleanMyMac, downloaded from MacPaw or the Mac App Store, is legitimate software from an established developer. The risks are elsewhere: fake “CleanMyMac” installers that carry malware, cleaning items you don’t understand, and paying yearly for something you use occasionally. Download only from macpaw.com or the App Store, review what it selects, and make sure the files you remove go somewhere you can restore them from.
- Download CleanMyMac only from macpaw.com or the Mac App Store, never from ads, pop-ups or file-sharing sites.
- Before cleaning, open each category and check what is selected.
- Leave items you don’t recognise unticked; look them up first.
- Keep a recent Time Machine backup before any big clean-up.
- Check your subscription renewal date in your MacPaw account if you don’t want it to renew.
The short version
- The app is legitimate. CleanMyMac is made by MacPaw, a long-established Mac developer, and is sold on its own site and the Mac App Store.
- Fake copies are not. Security researchers have reported malware disguised as CleanMyMac installers, spread through search ads and fake download sites (AppleInsider, 2024). The download source matters more than the brand.
- Any cleaner can remove something you needed if you click Clean without looking. That is a risk of the habit, not of one app.
What “safe” should mean for a Mac cleaner
- It tells you what each item is before you remove it.
- It labels risk. Caches of closed apps are low-risk; an iPhone backup or a Docker disk is not.
- It moves files to the Trash first, so you can put them back.
- It leaves system items to Apple’s own tools: tmutil for Time Machine snapshots, simctl for Xcode simulators.
- It proves the space came back instead of showing an estimate.
Things no cleaner should touch
- The macOS system volume. It’s sealed and read-only on modern macOS. What that means
- Your only copy of iPhone backups you still need. Where they live
- Docker.raw directly. Shrink it with Docker’s own commands. How
- Mail and Messages data unless you’ve decided you don’t need old attachments.

Let Tidy Mac do this for you
See every part of your storage explained, and clear junk to the Trash with Undo. $9.99 once, 2 Macs.
Do you need CleanMyMac at all?
macOS includes malware protection (XProtect and Gatekeeper) and basic storage recommendations in System Settings › General › Storage. Where Macs actually run out of room is System Data, which macOS won’t open for you. If that’s your problem, you need something that explains System Data, not necessarily a suite. What is System Data?
The Tidy Mac approach
Tidy Mac explains every part of System Data and sorts each item into Safe to clear (ticked for you), Worth a look (your call) or Kept (shown, never removed). Whatever you clear goes to the Trash first, and History lets you put it back. It’s $9.99 once for 2 Macs, with no subscription. It deliberately doesn’t scan for malware. Tidy Mac vs CleanMyMac
