What is the .gradle folder on my Mac?

It belongs to Gradle (Android and Java builds). Here’s what’s inside and the right way to deal with it.

Short answer

~/.gradle is Gradle’s home folder. Most of its size is ~/.gradle/caches, downloaded libraries and build outputs Gradle can fetch again. Deleting caches is safe but makes the next Android or Java build slow. Keep gradle.properties, which may hold settings or signing config.

Location: ~/.gradle

What’s inside

  • caches: downloaded dependencies and transforms
  • wrapper/dists: Gradle versions
  • gradle.properties: your settings
TidyMac label: Check first. This may be the only copy of something. Look at the details before removing.

Clear the caches

rm -rf ~/.gradle/caches ~/.gradle/wrapper/dists

Keep ~/.gradle/gradle.properties.

Find every folder like this on your Mac

TidyMac lists big folders outside its library, checks which app owns each one and whether that app is still installed, and explains it.
