How to uninstall Firefox on Mac completely

Dragging Firefox to the Trash leaves its data behind. Here’s every place it keeps files, which ones matter, and how to remove the rest.

Short answer

Quit Firefox, drag it from Applications to the Trash, then remove ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox (your profiles: bookmarks, passwords, history, add-ons), ~/Library/Caches/Firefox, ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist and its saved state. Sign in to sync or copy your profile first if you want to keep anything.

Before you start. Type about:profiles in the address bar to see which profile you use and where it’s stored.

Uninstall Firefox step by step

  1. Sign in to a Mozilla account and sync, or copy your profile folder somewhere safe.
  2. Quit Firefox (Firefox › Quit Firefox).
  3. Drag Firefox from Applications to the Trash.
  4. Move ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox to the Trash.
  5. Move ~/Library/Caches/Firefox to the Trash.
  6. Move ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist and ~/Library/Saved Application State/org.mozilla.firefox.savedState to the Trash.
  7. Empty the Trash when you’re sure.

Where Firefox leaves files

LocationWhat it isAfter uninstalling
~/Library/Application Support/FirefoxProfiles: bookmarks, passwords, history, add-onsCheck first
~/Library/Caches/FirefoxWeb cache for each profileSafe
~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plistPreferencesSafe
~/Library/Saved Application State/org.mozilla.firefox.savedStateWindow positionsSafe

In Finder choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G) and paste a path to open it. Safe means nothing you made is inside; Check first means it may hold the only copy of something. To see how much space they use, run this read-only command in Terminal:

du -sh ~/Library/Application\ Support/Firefox ~/Library/Caches/Firefox ~/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/org.mozilla.firefox.savedState 2>/dev/null

Profiles live in one folder

Firefox keeps each profile in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles, and its disk cache separately in ~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles. The cache is always safe to delete; the profile is your browsing life.

Uninstalling to fix a problem?

Try Refresh Firefox first: type about:support in the address bar and click Refresh Firefox. It keeps bookmarks, passwords and history but resets add-ons and settings, which fixes most problems without reinstalling.

Uninstall Firefox with TidyMac

TidyMac’s uninstaller lists every app with its size and last use, and finds the leftovers that belong to it by bundle ID. Remove Firefox and its leftovers in one review: everything goes to the Trash first, you confirm twice, TidyMac checks the disk afterwards, and you can put anything back. Leftovers from apps you already deleted are found too, labelled Check first.

Frequently asked questions

Does dragging Firefox to the Trash uninstall it completely?

No. It removes the app, but Firefox leaves 4 kinds of files behind in your Library and elsewhere: profiles: bookmarks, passwords, history, add-ons; web cache for each profile; preferences. The steps above remove them.

What is Firefox’s bundle ID on Mac?

org.mozilla.firefox. Most of its leftover files and folders are named after it, which is how you (and TidyMac) can tell they belong to Firefox.

Can I reinstall Firefox later?

Yes. Download it again from Mozilla. Anything stored in your account online comes back when you sign in; local-only data you removed does not.
