How to uninstall Microsoft Teams on Mac completely

Dragging Microsoft Teams to the Trash leaves its data behind. Here’s every place it keeps files, which ones matter, and how to remove the rest.

Short answer

Quit Teams, drag Microsoft Teams from Applications to the Trash, then remove ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2 and ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams. If you used classic Teams, also remove ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams. Leave Microsoft AutoUpdate and the other UBF8T346G9 folders alone if you use Office.

Uninstall Microsoft Teams step by step

  1. Quit Teams completely (Microsoft Teams › Quit Microsoft Teams).
  2. Drag Microsoft Teams from Applications to the Trash.
  3. Move ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2 to the Trash.
  4. Move ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams to the Trash.
  5. If you used classic Teams, move ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams to the Trash.
  6. Leave Microsoft AutoUpdate in place if you use Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook.
  7. Empty the Trash.

Where Microsoft Teams leaves files

LocationWhat it isAfter uninstalling
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2Cache, settings and sign-in for the current TeamsSafe
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teamsData shared between Teams componentsSafe
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/TeamsClassic Teams data, if you used itSafe
/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0Microsoft AutoUpdate, shared with OfficeLeave alone

In Finder choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G) and paste a path to open it. Safe means nothing you made is inside; Check first means it may hold the only copy of something. To see how much space they use, run this read-only command in Terminal:

du -sh ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2 ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams 2>/dev/null

New Teams and classic Teams

The current Teams for Mac uses the bundle ID com.microsoft.teams2. Classic Teams, which Microsoft has retired, used different folders under ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams. If you upgraded, you may have both.

Don’t break Office

UBF8T346G9 is Microsoft’s developer prefix, so you’ll see several Group Containers starting with it, such as UBF8T346G9.Office and UBF8T346G9.ms. Those belong to Office apps and your Microsoft sign-in. Remove only the one ending in .com.microsoft.teams. Microsoft AutoUpdate also updates Office, so keep it unless Teams was your only Microsoft app.

Uninstall Microsoft Teams with TidyMac

TidyMac’s uninstaller lists every app with its size and last use, and finds the leftovers that belong to it by bundle ID. Leftovers from apps you already deleted are found too, labelled Check first.

Frequently asked questions

Does dragging Microsoft Teams to the Trash uninstall it completely?

No. It removes the app, but Microsoft Teams leaves 4 kinds of files behind in your Library and elsewhere: cache, settings and sign-in for the current teams; data shared between teams components; classic teams data, if you used it. The steps above remove them.

What is Microsoft Teams’s bundle ID on Mac?

com.microsoft.teams2. Most of its leftover files and folders are named after it, which is how you (and TidyMac) can tell they belong to Microsoft Teams.

Can I reinstall Microsoft Teams later?

Yes. Download it again from Microsoft. Anything stored in your account online comes back when you sign in; local-only data you removed does not.
